KOLACE (CZECH BREAD) | |
5 c. flour 2 sticks butter 3/4 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 4 eggs 1/2 c. scalded milk 1 sm. can evaporated milk 1 pkg. dry yeast 1/4 c. warm water NUT FILLING: 1 lb. ground walnuts 1 c. sugar Mix flour, butter, sugar and salt as for pie crust. Add scalded milk and evaporated milk together and beaten eggs. Make a well and pour in the yeast that has been mixed with the warm water and 1 teaspoon sugar and allowed to rise first. Mix and let the dough rise twice. Divide the dough into six pieces; roll each piece into an oblong shape and sprinkle with ground nuts and sugar. Roll up and place on cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining pieces of dough. Let rise until double. Brush tops with 1 egg yolk and 2 tablespoons milk. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. (Make sure walnuts are ground very fine, but do not put in blender.) |
