DATE DROP COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
3 eggs, well beaten
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolve in hot water
3 1/2 c. flour
3/4 lb. dates, cut up
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. nuts, chopped
1/2 c. water

Cream shortening and brown sugar; add beaten eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Add dissolved soda and flour. Combine last 4 ingredients in saucepan and cook until thickened. Drop 1 tablespoon of dough on cookie sheet; put 1 teaspoon of filling on them and then more dough. Bake at 350 degrees.
