APPLE JOHN 
1 1/2 lbs. sliced cooking apples
3/4 c. sugar
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
2 tbsp. butter

PASTRY:

2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. butter
2/3 c. milk

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Put apples in baking dish. Mix sugar with spices; sprinkle on apples. Dot with butter.

Sift flour, salt and baking powder together, cut in butter. Add milk; mix with fork until ingredients are just blended. Knead lightly on floured surface. Roll out; cut into 2" rounds. Arrange on top of apples; press sides down well. Brush lightly with milk. Bake 25 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees, cook 20 minutes. 5 to 6 servings.
