NANA'S SHOOFLY CAKE 
1 c. baking syrup (Gold Label)
2 c. boiling water
1 tbsp. baking soda
4 c. flour
1 lb. light brown sugar
3/4 c. Crisco
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix baking syrup and boiling water. Let stand until cool, add baking soda. Mix flour, brown sugar, Crisco and salt together like pie dough (crumbly). Set aside 2 cups for top of cake.

Mix together liquid and remaining crumbs (this batter will be thin). Pour in 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Put 2 cups reserved crumbs on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Garnish with whipped cream or Cool Whip. Enjoy warm.
