690 BATTER BUNS 
1 c. warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
1 pkg. dry yeast
2 tbsp. sugar
2 1/2 c. plain flour or bread flour
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
2 tbsp. soft butter or shortening

Measure warm water into large warm bowl. Sprinkle in yeast; stir until dissolved. Stir in sugar, half the flour, and salt. (If you use self rising flour omit the salt.) Beat egg until smooth with fork and add to mixture, add butter. Beat with spoon until smooth. Gradually add rest of flour. Scrape down sides of bowl and cover. Let rise in warm place, free from draft until double in bulk, about 30 minutes. Stir down dough. Spoon in 12 large greased muffin cups, filling each 1/2 full, again let rise until dough reaches tops of muffin cups, 20-30 minutes. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until done. Makes 12 buns.
