BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
1 1/2 cup sugar
2/3 cup butter
2 beaten egg yolks
1 cup cold water
2/3 cup burnt sugar syrup (below)
3 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
2 egg whites, beaten

Cream sugar and butter. Add egg yolks, water and burnt sugar syrup. Add flour sifted with baking soda. Stir in vanilla. Fold in egg whites. Bake in two 9-inch layer pans at 350°F. Cool and ice.

Icing:

6 tbsp. butter
1 (1 lb.) box powdered sugar
1/4 cup burnt sugar syrup

Mix butter, powdered sugar and burnt sugar syrup.

Burnt Sugar Syrup:

1 cup white sugar
1 cup water

Put sugar in heavy saucepan or skillet. Stir over heat until it browns and liquefies. Take off heat and stir in the water (carefully).
