BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
1 peck cucumbers
1/2 c. salt
2 qts. vinegar
8 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. pickling spice
1/2 tsp. alum

Slice cucumbers, cover with salt, then with boiling water. Let stand overnight. In the morning, drain and place in jars. Boil vinegar, sugar, spice and alum 10 minutes. Pour over cucumbers and seal.
