JAM FILLS 
1 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c. soft shortening
3/4 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 c. rolled oats
Whatever type jam or jelly preferred

Start heating oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour, soda, salt. With electric mixer at medium speed, or "cream", or with spoon, mix shortening with sugar, egg, and vanilla until very light and fluffy. At low speed or "blend", beat in flour mixture, then oats.

Form dough into 1-inch balls. Place balls on ungreased cookie sheet. Make slight depression in center of each ball; fill with jam. Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden. If you like coconut, the balls may be rolled in flaked coconut before the jam is put on. (Can be made a day or so before.)
