2 3/4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. applesauce
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chopped nuts, optional
1 (6 oz.) bag chocolate chips

Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Drop dough by level tablespoonfuls 2-inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees 10 minutes or until almost no thumb print remains. Remove from baking sheet; cool. Makes 4 1/2 to 5 dozen.
