1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 lg. egg
1 1/2 c. thick unsweetened applesauce
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. each cinnamon, allspice & cloves
1 c. chopped raisins or dates
1/2 c. walnuts
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. boiling water

Mix together. Bake in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.

FROSTING:

1 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. cream

Boil 1 minute and add: 1 tsp. vanilla
