VERY BEST GINGERBREAD 
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1 egg
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. clove
1 c. molasses (Ribbon cane syrup)
1 c. hot water

Melt shortening and cool. Add sugar and egg; beat well. Sift dry ingredients. Combine molasses and water; add to dry ingredients. Pour in 9 x 13 greased and floured pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

WHITE SAUCE:

2/3 c. sugar
1 1/2 tbsp. flour
1 1/2 c. milk

Mix together and cook until thick, stirring constantly. Add 1 tsp. vanilla. Put on each serving.
