SCHOOL DAY COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 beaten eggs
1/4 c. orange juice
2 tbsp. grated orange peel
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. enriched flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. quick cooking oats
1/2 c. chopped dates
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar, add eggs and beat well. Add orange juice, orange peel and vanilla. Stir in flour, sifted with salt and soda. Add oats, chopped dates and walnuts. Drop from a teaspoon onto greased cookie sheet. Bake in moderately hot oven (375 degrees) for 12 to 14 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.
