2 c. cornmeal (plain, not self-rising)
1 tbsp. plain flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
3 tbsp. onion, chopped sm. or grated

Mix dry ingredients; add remaining ingredients. Drop by small spoonfuls into deep hot fat. Puppies will float when done.

Note: If buttermilk is unavailable, use 1 cup sweet milk and 1 tablespoon vinegar, although this isn't quite as good as buttermilk.
