APPLE - CINNAMON PUFFS
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1/2 tsp. red food coloring
4-5 tart apples, peeled and sliced
1 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening
3/4 c. milk

Boil first 3 ingredients to a syrup (about 5 minutes). Place apples in a greased, shallow baking dish; pour syrup over apples and sprinkle cinnamon on top. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt; cut shortening in with pastry blender. Stir in milk.

Drop dough by spoonfuls on top of apples and make a dent in top of each. Place in dented dough a mixture of 2 tablespoons melted butter, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Bake at 450 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Serve warm. Delicious when topped with vanilla ice cream.
