DATE TORTE 
FILLING:

1 lb. chopped dates
1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. water

TORTE:

1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. rolled oats
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c. shortening

FILLING: Mix filling ingredients in medium saucepan. Cook over low-medium heat until thick.

TORTE: Sift flour before measuring into bowl. Add oats, sugar, salt, and soda. Cut in shortening until mixed well. Spread 1/2 of this mixture in shallow pan 7 x 14 inches. Spread date filling over this. Cover with remaining torte mixture. Bake 25 minutes at 375 degrees.
