CARAMELIZED DUMPLINGS 
1/2 c. sugar
2 1/2 c. water
1 c. sugar
3 tbsp. butter
1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. soft shortening
3/4 c. milk
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 to 1 1/2 c. flour

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Caramelize 1/2 cup sugar by browning in heavy skillet or pan. In a baking pan combine 2 1/2 cups water, 1 cup sugar, and 3 tablespoon butter. Add caramelized sugar and boil a short time to make a THIN syrup.

In a bowl combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon soft shortening, 3/4 cup milk, 2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and enough flour, about 1 to 1 1/4 cups, to make a thick batter. Drop into the boiling syrup by the spoonfuls. Bake until golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream or whip cream.
