IRISH SODA BREAD | |
3 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. cream of tartar 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. sugar 2 tbsp. shortening 1 egg 1 1/2 c. buttermilk 1 c. raisins 1 tbsp. caraway seeds Mix all dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening and add raisins and caraway seeds. Beat egg in buttermilk. Add to dry mixture. Batter will be heavy. BAke in greased and floured round pan 8 1/2 x 4 inches in 350 degree oven for about 1 hour. Memo: For shortening, I use Wesson or Mazola oil. I also use loaf pans instead of round. Check bread with pick in about 1/2 hour or so and bake until golden brown. Mine do not take 1 hour to bake. |
