1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water

Pour water over dates and soda and cool.

1/4 c. shortening
1 c. white sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. walnuts

Cream shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla. Add flour, baking powder, salt, walnuts and date mixture. Bake in a greased pan at 350 degrees for about 30-40 minutes.

5 tbsp. brown sugar
3 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. cream
1/2 c. coconut

Cover the hot cake and return to oven and broil for 3 minutes.
