1 c. cut up dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. flour
1 tbsp. cocoa
3/4 c. shortening
2 eggs
1/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. nuts
1 1/4 c. boiling water, poured over dates & soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chocolate chips

After pouring water over dates. Set aside for later. Cream together shortening, sugar, vanilla and eggs. Sift together dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture, stirring well. Then pour date mixture over creamed and dry ingredients; mix well. Pour into greased 7 x 11 inch pan. Sprinkle sugar, nuts and chocolate chips over top. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
