OLD - FASHIONED HOMEMADE BREAD | |
2 pkg. yeast 10 1/2-11 c. plain flour 2 c. milk 2 c. warm water 1/3 c. shortening 1 tbsp. salt 1/4-1/2 c. sugar (as desired) Dissolve yeast packages in warm water. Mix into this 2 cups of flour. Place the remaining flour in another large bowl. Add the milk, sugar, salt and shortening. Add yeast mixture to this and work together until bread dough is formed. Knead this on a floured board on cloth for approximately 10 minutes. Put back in large bowl and place in warm place for approximately 1 hour or until doubled. Cover with cloth while rising to hold in heat. Put back on floured board on cloth and knead another 10 minutes. Divide dough into 4 equal loaves and place in greased loaf pans. Bake at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes or until brown and bread makes thumping sound when tapped. |
