GYROS
Mix all ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef or lamb (or 1/2 and 1/2)
2-3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 egg
1/4 c. bread crumbs
2 tsp. oregano
2 tsp. basil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

SAUCE:

Mix all ingredients:

1 c. plain yogurt
1/2 c. sour cream
1 cucumber, grated and squeezed (to get out some of the juice)
1 clove garlic, crushed
Salt and pepper to taste

Other ingredients required:

Pita bread
Chopped tomatoes
Chopped onions

Form the meat mixture into patties and cook in olive oil. Remove the patties and lightly fry the pita bread in the oil. Slice the patties. Top with pita bread with meat, onions, tomatoes and sauce. Note: The sauce is better if prepared one day in advance.

Gyros

I have tried several gyro recipes, this one is very good, maybe the best I've tried... Since I used ground turkey in place of beef or lamb, I cut the oregano and basil in half as spices seem to be more flavorful in turkey. Also added a dash of Italian seasoning to meat mixture. Cooked low n slow on griddle on stovetop the squeezed a little lemon juice into the taziki sauce. Will be making again! Thank you for sharing your recipe!

I followed this sauce recipe exactly and it is GREAT! I am in the process of making my Gyro meat using a different recipe and have not had a chance to try everything together, but can't wait. My boyfriend is addicted to Gyro's and I thought if I could find a way to make them myself it would greatly benefit our relationship!

Great recipe. I had some leftover lamb (from a rack of lamb), chopped it up in the food processor, added all the ingredients listed here. I didn't have bread crumbs, so I ran some oatmeal through the food processor and used that instead (worked just fine for bonding everything together). I used Greek yogurt instead, and no sour cream, and the sauce was still delicious. Instead of making hamburger-like patties, I shaped them into long strips about the diameter of the pita bread and about 1/2 inch thick and two inches wide. I will definitely make this again.

I use my own recipe for sauce but this meat turned out great! We don't have any lamb available where I live but the seasoning was perfect to replicate real Gyros! I will definitely use this meat recipe again.

This is an excellent alternative to restaurant gyros. I did not expect it to taste so identical. According to my husband the cucumber sauce was "spot on". It really was amazing how much it tasted like the wonderful gyros we had in Chicago. We will be making these again and often.

It would work for left over meatloaf and don't drain the cucumbers...the moisture makes nice with the pita pockets.
