OLD FASHIONED OATMEAL COOKIES
1 c. seedless raisins
1 c. water
3/4 c. shortening, soft
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt and soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 c. rolled oats
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Simmer raisins and water in a saucepan over low heat until raisins are plump, about 20-30 minutes. Drain raisin liquid into measuring cup, adding enough water to make 1/2 cup.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Cream shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in raisin liquid. Measure flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and spices and stir in. Add rolled oats, nuts, and raisins. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes. This recipe yields 6-7 dozen.
