OLD FASHIONED OATMEAL COOKIES 
1 c. seedless raisins
1 c. water
3/4 c. soft shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 c. chopped nuts, if desired
2 c. rolled oats

Simmer raisins and water in saucepan over low heat until raisins are plump, 20-30 minutes. Drain raisin liquid into measuring cup. Add water to make 1/2 cup. Heat oven to 400 degrees.

Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Stir in raisin liquid. Sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices. Stir in. Add rolled oats, raisins and optional nuts. Drop rounded teaspoonful 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes. Makes 6-7 dozen.
