MARASCHINO CHERRY CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 1/4 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. cherry juice
1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. chopped nuts
16 maraschino cherries
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add dry ingredients alternately with liquids. Add nuts and chopped cherries. Fold in egg whites. Bake in greased and floured layer pans at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

ICING:

1 box powdered sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
Milk
Red food coloring

Mix all ingredients. Add enough milk to make spreading consistency. Add 2-3 drops food color.
