BEEF A LA FRANCAISE 
(3 lb.) 1 1/2 lb. beef cubes
(4 tbsp.) 2 tbsp. shortening
(2 cans) 10 1/2 oz. can golden mushroom soup
(1 1/2 c.) 3/4 c. water
(1 1/2 c.) 3/4 c. canned tomatoes
(2 tbsp.) 1 tbsp. wine vinegar
(1/4 tsp.) 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
(4) 2 whole cloves
(2 lb.) 1 lb. sm. whole white onions or large onions, quartered
Mushrooms; optional

Brown beef cubes in shortening in a heavy pan; drain.

Stir in remaining ingredients except onion.

Cover and cook over low heat for 1 hour.

Add onions. Cook 1 hour longer. Stir occasionally.

Serve with rice, noodles, or potatoes.
