CREAMED TUNA AND PEAS ON TOAST 
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
a few grinds fresh pepper
1 cup milk
1 can tuna, drained
1 can peas, drained
1 slice bread per person, toasted, buttered (opt)

Melt butter or margarine in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add flour, salt and pepper and stir until flour is slightly browned.

Remove from heat and slowly stir in milk until flour is incorporated. Return to heat and bring to a boil, stirring, for 1 minute, until thickened.

Add drained tuna and peas and heat thoroughly, without boiling.

Ladle over toast on plate or bowl and serve warm.

My mom made this for years but never put peas in it. I started putting in peas myself because of love canned peas. I use garlic powder instead of salt. This dish already has plenty of salt from the tuna and peas. My mom never added salt.

I grew up eating this, except we used hard boiled eggs instead of peas (Dad didn't care for peas). Like other commenters, I thought we were the only ones eating this, trying to save a few bucks. Brings back fond memories, will have to make some this weekend.

A family classic Mom would make 4 us 6 boys since Mom a widow parent not much money for groceries she would make this classic meal.Very creative, Mom could certainly do magic what ever she had on hand to feed us, another favorite can roast beef w/potatoes. Grew up with creamed tuna, but my mother used Aunt Penny's White Sauce (in a can) and frozen peas and carrots. Served over rice. Great!

The whole family loves tuna gravy. Its tasty, cheap, fast and so easy! I'm gluten free so I substitute corn starch for flour and serve the gravy on rice. Yummy!

This is a depression dish from the 1930's. I grew up eating this dish and loved it. The family carried over dishes like this that were favorites during the depression. The orgins of the dish most likely came from a manufacturer written down on their label to increase their sells during that time. It has'nt changed over the years and is an American favorite.

My grandma used to make this all the time! We just called it tuna and peas in a white sauce! She used to make it over potatoes, and I always liked it over crackers. I think I'll make this on the anniversary of her passing, in her honor!
