1 (8 oz.) pkg. dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. flour
1 c. hot water
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 of 6 oz. pkg. chocolate chips
1/2 c. nut meats

Let dates stand in the hot water until cool. Cream shortening with sugar. Add eggs, vanilla; sift together cocoa, soda, and flour. Add date mixture. Put in large coffee cake pan. Sprinkle on top 1/2 package chocolate chips and nut meats. Bake in 350 degree oven about 45 minutes.
