HOLIDAY BREAD BABKA | |
1/2 lb. butter 10 c. flour 6 eggs 1 c. raisins 1 1/4 c. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 yeast cakes 2 c. milk 2 tsp. salt Put yeast in coffee cup; add 1/2 teaspoon sugar and 1/2 cup warm water (not too hot). Cover and watch until it doubles size in cup. Put 1/2 the flour and all dry ingredients in a very large bowl. Gradually add milk, butter and beaten eggs to the flour. Add the remaining flour and yeast a little at a time. Mix dough (knead) until it doesn't stick to your hands. (Add more flour if needed.) Take the large bowl and cover with Saran Wrap, then place in an empty oven. Set a bowl of hot water in oven to help it rise. Let dough rise until doubled in size. (Oil sides and top of dough before putting it in bowl.) Punch down and divide into 3 parts. Put into 3 greased loaf pans. Let rise again until 1 inch over the pan. Then preheat oven to 350 degrees for 1 hour. |
