CHOCOLATE CHIP, DATE AND NUT
CAKE
 
1 c. chopped dates
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/4 c. plus 3 tbsp. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. sugar
1 small pkg. chocolate chips
1/4 c. chopped nuts
2 eggs

Pour water over dates and add 1 teaspoon baking soda. Let cool. Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs. Beat well. Add date mixture. Then sift flour, salt and 3/4 teaspoon baking soda. Mix into other ingredients. Put into 9 x 13-inch cake pan, greased and floured. Put mixture of sugar and chocolate chips. Place nuts on top of cake.

Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes.
