MOM RHODA'S DEVILS FOOD CAKE 
1 stick butter, softened
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sour milk (1 c. milk and 1 tsp. vinegar)
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. cocoa
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water

Combine all dry ingredients in large mixing bowl; add butter, vanilla, butter and sour milk; mix well; add boiling water; mix well. Pour cake mixture into greased and floured 9 inch cake pans. Place in preheated 350 degree oven; bake 25 minutes; if cake cooks to fast reduce heat slightly.

ICING:

1 stick real butter
2 c. sugar
1 c. cream
1 tsp. vanilla

Icing may be cooked in large saucepan or double boiler. Combine butter, sugar and cream in pan; heat to boiling stirring constantly until mixture forms a soft ball in cold water. Remove from heat, add vanilla, beat until cool and beginning to thicken. Ice cooled cake immediately.

NOTE: Think of icing as candy; it will harden like fudge if over cooked and be a dipping sauce if under cooked. Don't start icing until cake is cooling.
