JULEKAGE (Danish Christmas Bread) | |
1 pkg. dry yeast 1/4 c. warm milk (for yeast) 1/2 c. butter 1/4 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 4 c. flour 1 c. milk 1 egg 1/2 c. raisins 1/2 c. candied fruit Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm milk, using large bowl. Add butter, salt, and sugar; mix well. Sift flour into bowl and add the rest of ingredients. Knead dough into springy and elastic. Place in greased bowl, let rise to double size, about 2 hours, in a warm place. Turn out on lightly floured board and knead lightly. Form into loaves, and place into well greased loaf pans. Cover and let rise again about 1 hour or to double in bulk. Brush with slightly beaten egg and bake 30-35 minutes in 350 degree oven. When baked make icing of powdered sugar and a little water, spread on top of loaves. |
