BASIC BROWNIES 
2/3 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
2 sqs. Baker's unsweetened chocolate
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 c. broken walnuts
1 tsp. vanilla

Measure sifted flour, baking powder, and salt together. Melt shortening and chocolate over hot water. Gradually add sugar to eggs, beating thoroughly. Blend in chocolate mixture. Mix in flour mixture. Add nuts and vanilla. Spread in greased 8 inch square pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool in pan. Cut into bars or squares. Makes about 20 brownies.
