AUNT JULIE'S HUNGARIAN GOULASH | |
2 lbs. beef or veal steak 1/4 c. shortening 1 c. chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 c. flour 3 tsp. paprika 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 1/4 tsp. dried thyme, crushed 2 bay leaves 1 (28 oz.) can tomatoes 1 c. sour cream Noodles Butter Cut meat into 1/2 inch cubes. In large skillet brown meat in hot shortening. Remove heat and add onion and garlic, cook until onions are tender but not brown. Blend in flour, paprika, salt, pepper, thyme and bay leaves. Add tomatoes, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally until meat is tender, 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stir often toward end of cooking. Stir in sour cream. Serve at once over hot buttered noodles. Serves 8. |
