2 1/3 c. sifted flour
1 (4 oz.) pkg. chocolate pie filling (the cook kind)
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
2/3 c. real butter
1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
3 eggs
1 tsp. pure vanilla
1 (6 oz. or 1 c.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 c. chopped walnuts (opt.)

Turn into 3 (8") round layer pans, greased and floured. (Use about 1 1/2 cups batter per pan.) Sprinkle chocolate morsels over layers.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool. Frost, stacking layers top side up. Decorate with walnuts.

FROSTING: Melt 6 ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/4 cup butter in 1/3 cup milk over low heat. Stir in 1 pound sifted confectioners' sugar. If necessary, thin with a few drops of milk.
