1/2 c. shortening
2 sq. bitter chocolate
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1 c. applesauce
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. pecans, chopped
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt

Melt and blend shortening and chocolate together. Cool. Stir in sugar, eggs, applesauce, vanilla and pecans. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and soda together and stir into chocolate mixture. Pour into greased 8x8 inch square pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes in 350 degree oven. Cut into squares.
