FAMOUS OATMEAL COOKIES 
3/4 c. vegetable shortening
1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
3 c. oats (uncooked)
1 c. flour
1 tsp. salt (optional)
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat together shortening, sugars, egg, water and vanilla until creamy. Add combined remaining ingredients; mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes.

Makes 5 dozen.
