BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 egg yolks, beaten
2 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 1/2 tsp. Clabber Girl (balanced) baking powder
3/4 c. water
3 tbsp. burnt sugar syrup
2 egg whites, beaten

Cream shortening and add sugar slowly while beating constantly. Add vanilla. Add beaten egg yolks and blend thoroughly. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to creamed mixture with the water, beating between each addition.

Add the burnt sugar syrup and blend carefully. Then fold in the beaten egg whites. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9-inch layer cake pans. Bake at 375 degrees (moderate oven) for 30-35 minutes. Frost with confectioners sugar icing flavored with burnt sugar syrup.
