FLAKY BUTTERMILK BISCUITS 
3 c. self-rising flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. sugar
1 c. shortening
1 c. buttermilk

Sift together dry ingredients; cut in shortening with pastry blender. Add buttermilk and mix to a soft dough. Turn out on floured surface; knead gently until smooth. Roll dough 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick; cut with biscuit cutter dipped in flour and place biscuits on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in 450 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until biscuits are browned. Yield: 12 to 14 biscuits.
