BUBLANINA CZECH COFFEE CAKE 
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
3/4 c. shortening
2 tsp. baking powder
2 egg yolks
1 c. milk
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 egg whites
Apples or berries

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Test for doneness. Cut as for pie crust the flour, sugar and shortening. Blend well. Remove 1 cup for topping. To this cup of mix add 1/4 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 cup sugar; set aside.

Add to remaining ingredients 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 egg yolks, 1 cup milk, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix well. Beat 2 egg whites. Fold gently into dough. Pour into 13 x 9 inch pan or two 9 inch pans. Line apples on top dipped or sprinkled with lemon juice. Sprinkle a mix of sugar and cinnamon over apples and topping.

I've been living in the Czech Republic for 9 years and have never seen or heard of using shortening in the recipe (the shortening here is hard like cold butter). Every recipe uses oil.

Hi Mary,

When a baking recipe calls for "shortening" it means that you can use butter, oil, Crisco, margarine, etc. All of these ingredients are "shortening".
