1/3 c. soft shortening (part butter)
1/2 c. sugar
1 egg
1 1/4 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. lemon extract or 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, egg, and flavoring. Sift together dry ingredients and stir in. Chill 1 hour. Heat oven to 400 degrees (moderate hot). Roll dough 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured board. Keep dough chilled, rolling only 1/4 at a time. Cut with star cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until browned. Decorate cool cookies with frosting. Makes 4 dozen.
