BARLEY BEAN SOUP 
1 c. Great Northern dried beans
2 qts. water
1/2 c. barley
1 onion, sliced thin
2 carrots, scraped & sliced
2 stalks celery, sliced
1 turnip, peeled & cut into chunks
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 sprig fresh dill weed
1 sprig fresh parsley
1 tsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. pepper

Boil water, covering beans and soak 1 hour. Pour off water and add 2 quarts fresh water. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and cook over low heat for 3 hours or until beans are tender. Stir occasionally. Makes 10 servings.
