OATMEAL COOKIES 
1 c. sugar
1 scant c. shortening
1 beaten egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 4 tbsp. sour milk or buttermilk
2 c. flour
2 c. rolled oats
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped nuts

I use a good big cup of chocolate bits in place of raisins. The butterscotch bits are good also. These are quite stiff but leave them that way. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
