MULLED WINE SYRUP 
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
2 c. water
1/2 tsp. grated nutmeg
1/2 tsp. powdered ginger
3 sticks cinnamon
36 whole cloves
6 whole cardamoms, bruised with flat edge of lg. knife
1 tsp. whole anise seed
18 whole allspice
1 lemon, sliced
1 orange, sliced
1 bottle claret or red wine
1/2 c. brandy
1/4 c. sliced almonds
3/4 c. white raisins
2 oranges, sliced, to put on the edge of each glass

In large saucepan, combine ingredients for mulled wine syrup except for the wine and brandy and fruit. Bring to a boil. Reduce flame and simmer 10 minutes. Add the brandy and wine. Bring to boiling point but DO NOT boil. Simmer 10 minutes. Add fruit. Pour into thick punch bowl, garnish with greens.
