GOLDEN BAKED ONIONS
1/2 c. (1 stick) butter
6 med. onions, sliced
1 (10 3/4 oz.) can cream of chicken soup
1 c. milk
Salt and freshly ground pepper
3/4 lb. Swiss or Gruyere cheese, sliced
French bread slices
Melted butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 2-quart shallow baking dish. Melt 1/2 cup butter in large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until tender and translucent, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes.

Transfer onion to prepared dish. Combine soup, milk, salt and pepper in bowl. Pour over onion. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Dip bread in melted butter on 1 slice only. Arrange buttered side up over onion mixture to cover completely. Bake until bread is browned, about 30 minutes. Serve hot.
