GOLDEN BAKED ONIONS 
1/2 c. butter
1 c. milk
Salt and pepper to taste
French bread slices
Melted butter
6 med. onions, sliced
1 can cream of chicken soup
3/4 lb. sirn or gruyere cheese, grated

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 2 quart shallow oven baking dish. Melt 1/2 cup butter in large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until tender and translucent, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes. Transfer onions to prepared dish. Combine soup, milk, salt and pepper in bowl. Pour over onions. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Dip bread slices in melted butter on one side. Arrange buttered side up over onion mixture to cover completely. Bake until bread is brown, about 30 minutes. Serve hot.
