2 pkgs. dry yeast 1 c. lukewarm water 2 tbsp. honey 1/4 c. soft butter 4 lg. eggs, beaten 1 tbsp. salt 5 c. white flour 1-2 c. wheat flour Sesame seeds (about 3 tbsp.) Poppy seeds (about 1 tbsp.) Dissolve yeast in water. Let stand 5 minutes. Set aside about 3 tablespoons of beaten egg (to be used for top of bread). Beat honey, butter, remaining eggs, salt and 2 cups of white flour into yeast mixture. Gradually mix in remaining flour. Knead dough on floured surface 15-20 minutes until smooth and uniform and unsticky. Place in greased bowl, cover with damp towel to rise in warm place until doubled in bulk. Punch down and knead 5 minutes. Divide into thirds. Knead each third 5-10 minutes, gradually transforming it into 1 1/2 inch diameter "snake". Let them rest 10 minutes. Braid the dough and place it on a tray sprinkled with sesame seeds. Let rise then brush with egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds and poppy seeds. Bake 375 degrees for 30-40 minutes. |
