BANANA DESSERT CAKE 
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 med. banana, sliced
1/4 c. coconut
10 maraschino cherries

Combine sugar and butter in pan. Heat until butter melts. Pour into greased loaf pan. Arrange banana slices and cherries and coconut on top.

CAKE: In bowl, mix 1/3 cup shortening and 1 cup granulated sugar. Beat until light. Beat in 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla. In separate bowl, mix together 1 1/2 cups flour, 3/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add alternately with 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1 cup mashed bananas to creamed mixture. Beat well after each addition. Pour over fruit in loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees about 1 hour. Immediately turn out onto serving plate.
