SOUTHERN SPICY GINGERBREAD 
3/4 c. shortening
3/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
3/4 c. light molasses
2 1/2 c. sifted all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. boiling water
Whipped cream for garnish or Lemon Sauce

In large mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each. Add molasses; mix well. Sift together the dry ingredients. Add alternately with water, mixing well after each addition. Pour into a well greased and floured 9"x9"x2" baking pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. Remove from pan. Cool on wire rack. Cut into squares; top with whipped cream, if desired.
