We used to make these in Kindergarten as "Dinosaur Food".
We colored the milk w/ green food coloring to make swamp water, called the sugar crushed bones, the peanut butter was fat from a dead dinosaur, etc. The kids loved it.

To the lady in NZ and using quick oats. Could you run the regular oats through the food processor. Would that work?? I have done that before and it seemed to work but it was not a "cooked" cookie it was mixed and baked.

Can these be made with butterscotch chips instead of the cocoa? I have a picky eater who doesn't like chocolate but loves butterscotch.

Briana, these will not set up right if you don't use quick oats. My grandma made these and I have changed a bit to make healthier--stevia instead of sugar, natural pnut butter, and dark cocoa. Also have added natural no-sugar coconut. Can't beat this recipe--we always make it at Christmas (and any other time I can sneak it in!!).

Hello Susan B. - Your Mom must be German, because there we have "Oleo" which is margarine. I plan to make these cookies soon, but don't like Peanut Butter that much and will try it with butter. --K--

I live in a very small town in southern KY. When I first moved to this area, I learned that everyone here breaks these no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies up into their bowl of pinto beans. I thought it was the craziest thing I'd ever heard! I decided to try it, and guess what. It's VERY good! I figure the idea originated in the school cafeteria, but it "caught on" and nearly everyone does it! Some people will not cook pinto beans without making these cookies to go with them, along, of course, with cornbread. What sounded crazy and gross to me at first, turned out to be delicious. You really don't taste the chocolate, or the peanut butter, but it gives the flavor of the beans a boost you'll find surprising. Try it sometime.

I made this recipe with the kids. It's simple and the cookies are tasty. They seem like chocolate fudge with oats in them. Did I do something wrong?

These cookies brought my step-son and I together when we found out that we both love to eat them hot, from the pan! If they aren't setting up, then you aren't boiling them long enough. I consider them boiling when there are good bubbles all aound the edge and they are spreading into the middle and time them from that point. Lots of practice make you an expert and lots of friends. Happy No-Baking :)

Susan, that is so funny how your family made fun of you about the Oleo. I was the same way! I called my mom and asked what the heck it was! Kind of old school. :)

My kids loves these cookies. They like to call them poop balls. They are now teenagers and they say it discourages any others from trying and keeping more for themselves.

 Cindy (Kentucky) says:
I always use evaporated milk and crunchy p-nut butter. And I like to eat them right out of the pan! They're also good after letting them sit in the fridge overnight.....YUM!

I've been making these for years, any variety of additions works. I would think that if you don't like the way regular oatmeal tastes and you can't find the minute kind that you could just put the regular ones in a blender for awhile to make the oats into smaller pieces.
