CHOCOLATE CHIP BROWNIES 
1 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1/3 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. chocolate chips

Sift flour, measure; add baking powder, soda and salt. Add nuts and mix (in a mixing bowl). Melt shortening in a saucepan and remove from heat. Mix in sugar. Add 1 tablespoon hot water IF vegetable shortening is used. Cool well, then stir in egg and vanilla. Add flour mixture, a small amount at a time, mixing well. Spread in greased 9" square pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool and cut into 24 pieces.
